Day trip from Riu Merengue

Hi. We’re planning a trip Mar 4 to PP at the Riu complex. I was wondering what the public or charter bus transportation system was like for a day trip to Puerto Plata from the complex. We have a large party of 4 adults and three young children. Is the trip worth taking, what is the cost and what is interesting for us to see and shop. Any info, comments or advice is greatly appreciated. And any other info regarding golfing in PP would be appreciated also.

We’ve been to the DR before, but this is our first trip to the North. Can’t wait!!

Thanks.

You could get a mini bus taxi at the resort or (for less money) just off the actuall resort. There are several nice places to visit in POP. The fort which is on the Malecon (Ocean boulavard). Central Park for a little history and best of all the Teleferico (cable car) up the mountain. Great views!

I would guess you should be able to get a taxi for the whole crew for a day for maybe 50 or 60 US. Negotiate.

The Teleferico was 200 pesos ($6 US) about a year`ago for non Dominicans.

If you want to shop for cigars, booze, vanilla, coffee etc. have the driver go to the Supermercado Tropical. The best prices for cigars are out in the country way away from the tourist areas.

Casa Nelson is a department store near central park. Anything in particular?

The ambermuseum in Puerto Plata is very interesting too.
