Great photos. What are the red fruits?

#11

Its Cocoa … only place where Cocoa can grow in Cuba is in Baracoa area … Cocoa needs specific climate and usually cocoa is grown in a narrow belt 10 degrees either side of the Equator but it does grow in Guantanamo province! That is why they have chocolate factory in Baracoa.

Canción a Baracoa

Baracoa ya te conocí
Letra y Música: Enrique Bonne
Versión: Oscar Montaro González

Un día fui
a conocer a Baracoa
Ese pedazo divino
de suelo oriental
y comprobé
los motivos
y la inmensa razón
que tuvo la naturaleza
para dar tanta belleza
a tan pequeño rincón.
Baracoa, tesoro guardado
En un cofre de montañas.
Maravilla del pueblo que vive
mirando hacia el mar .
Ha situado en su alta Farola
Guardianes de pino,
Cacao y café.
Y jugando
Entre montes y valles
Van tres ríos guardando su amor:
Simbolizan el Duaba su historia,
el Toa su gloria
y el Miel su sabor.

Thanks for all of these posts! It certainly is a beautiful area of Cuba.

#15

Thank you @drgdrg I see 682 people view this thread and hopefully will help someone who wants to travel to this first town that Christopher Columbus discovered 500 years ago. Its definitely different and very far from Havana or Varadero but lots of tourists that visit Satiago de Cuba or Holguin take 2 … 3 days trips to this beautiful area as well many organized tours and backpackers.

#16

A really nice area of Cuba indeed!

What would be the best way to get there?

Is there any hotel or resort?

How long one should stay there? Is it worth a whole week or usually 2-3 days is enough?

#17

The best way to get there is if you are in Santiago de Cuba area as you can take Viazul for 15CUC or hire private taxi. Other option is if you are in Holguin area to hire private taxi and go to Baracoa. Problem is that from Holguin there is no Viazul to Baracoa and road is not very nice. As well twice per week there is airplane that fly from Havana to Baracoa!

Yes there are a few hotels and casa particulares. I would recommend hotel El Castillo (has many stairs) or Hotel Porto Santo. Is it worth a week? I stayed for a month or two but I like to explore and go hiking. They have beautiful rivers and El Yunque mountain and some lovely beach areas around the town. If you like to explore and know the area better 1 week will not be enough but if you wish to see the center of the town and check how it looks 2 - 3 days is ok. Some travel agencies in Cuba offer just that 3 days in Baracoa.
