Saw this fish in Holguin - what is it?

Can anyone tell me what this fish is? We saw it not too far off shore in front of the Play Costa Verde in Holguin.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi LisaW

This is a lionfish.

Wossa… ;D

Thanks Wossa - I knew I could count on the forum for an answer! Do you happen to know if it’s poisonous?

This is a poisonous fish, this is how Wikipedia describes the Lion Fish.

The lionfish is one of the most venomous fish in the ocean bottom floor. Lionfish have venomous dorsal spines that are used purely for defense. When threatened, the fish often faces its attacker in a head-down posture which brings its spines to bear. However, a lionfish’s sting is usually not fatal to humans. If a human is envenomed, that person will experience extreme pain and possible headaches and vomiting and breathing difficulties.

You might want to report your Lionfish sighting to Reef.org. They are compiling data on this invasive species. I just reported the one I saw at Cayo Santa Maria last week.
