Sunwing carry-on luggage question

Hi,

This is a question for anyone who has used Sunwing Vacations or Sunwing Airlines recently. I am flying with Sunwing for the first time on Monday (out of Fredericton NB) and see the carry-on allowance is only 5 kg (one bag only). Do I have to include my small camera bag and small purse as part of that allowance or can I carry them separately? My jacket pocket is too small to stuff much inside, but if I add my purse and camera bag to my small carry-on bag, I think I might be slightly over the 5 kg. allowance.

From the Sunwing website:

"Items permitted but not considered part of the carry-on baggage allowance include camera, coats, purses, urns containing human remains, strollers, child restraint systems, canes, crutches, walkers, containers carrying life sustaining items and other similar items. "

Thanks cubavisitor for answering my question so quickly.

I should have checked the website myself - just didn’t think to do that. My printed documention says “you may carry onboard one standard article weighing no more than 5 kg” but there was no mention of camera and purse and I didn’t search further.

I just looked at the info on the website you posted and it says the carry-on weight allowance is up to 10 kg. However, in the email sent to me after I booked, it says maximum 5 kg. I think I will follow the 5 kg limit to be on the safe side, but bet this might cause some problems for some travellers.

Thanks again for your help.

Anyone who wants to bring more than what is stated on their ticket should check with their carrier. Airlines are getting very strick about baggage weights.

Sunwing is max 5 kg carry-on (or 11 lbs). I usually pack some undies, a bathing suit, and a change of clothes, in case my suitcase gets lost. It never has. DO NOT pack your camera in your luggage, or anything of value - just had a friend tell me on his trip to Varadero his medications and camera were stolen from his suitcase. It could have been done in Toronto, I suggested (remember the gangs of employees caught stealing?) - but a good reminder to never pack anything of true value. Keep it on your person instead.

We are flying to Holguin March 31 out of Toronto and just got our e tickets from Sunwing…I can not find any mention of the limit for carry on luggage.
The website does state 10 kg…maybe I should call?
Where on the ticket does it indicate 5 kg I have read and reread this ticket…can’t find it?
Thanks for your help!

Eloisegirl - when I flew down to Cuba with Sunwing in January, I had 9.9kg in my carry-on (thanks to my new Hey’s luggage scale) and they said nothing!

The website says 10kg, and I took advantage of every last gram!

Have they changed things again??

hemmy,

I agree - no mention of weight limit for carry-on bag on my e-ticket and documentation that I printed from the Sunwing site.

When I booked with Sunwing, I received a confirmation email from them (I booked directly from the Sunwing Vacations website). That is where I read that the carry-on bag limit was 5 kg. Here is what it said ( I have just cut and pasted from the email):

I am not overly concerned as my carry-on bag is under 5 kg but if you want to carry more, it would be worth a call to Sunwing to know for sure what the weight restriction is.

Hi, We just flew sunwing out of toronto to cuba. OUr carryon weight was 10 kg. When I phoned sunwing to ck on this as I thought the value was quite high they told me to ck the website. Thus 10kg was brought carryon without any problems. On the way to Cuba we have our 10 kg back packs that fit into the dimensional restrictions with our purses. On the way back we had each: one back pack, one purse, and also one bag with rums/etc… There were no problems on the way back.

oatey - we flew Sunwing out of Fredericton last year! No worries - we each had a carry on, camera and I had my purse. There was no problem whatsoever.!! No questions asked. Have a great trip!!!

cubajunkie,

Thanks for the reassurance and good wishes. Hope the Fredericton weather on Monday is better than it has been the last two Mondays - both of those flights had major issues gettting to Cuba.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. This is such a great forum - my questions are always answered so quickly.

I think I will print the info off the website to have handy if I am challenged on the 10 kg carryon as my tickets only give checked baggage weight. Probably won’t even be bothered by the check in staff!

My wife and I were planning on taking one carry-on each and one back pack each. Anyone know if this might work? We were not planning on checking any luggage.

Its my personal opinion that a back-pack is a ‘carry-on’ and you might have a hard time if both of you are each taking a pack and a more formal carry-on bag. Unless you are going to take a taxi from the airport to your Cuban destination, you’re going to have to wait for everyone else’s luggage to be de-planed anyway before leaving.

Another issue with trying to travel without checking luggage is the 100 ml restriction on liquids… Just something to keep in mind.

Whether or not they will accept your backpack and small suitcase is up to the carrier. Probably if one can go under the seat and the other above, it will be OK.

But do remember you will then have to find toothpaste, sunscreen, insect repellent, anti-itch and all that kind of stuff in Cuba and it ain’t cheap.

If you are going to a resort, you will have to wait for the others to collect their bags anyway, so you aren’t saving anything in the way of time.

I really don’t understand people who carry everything including the kitchen sink onto the plane, especially when your checked bags aren’t charged for.

So do your fellow passengers and yourself a favour, and check one bag.

Just came back last night. On our way down we each had 10 kg carry on. Plus I had a good sized purse for under my seat full. Plus a camera strung across my neck . Plus a small fleese blanket for my legs. No problems at all. On the way back of course nothing. Fill it up butter cup.
cheers

We just got back from an SW vacation… we weren’t heavily loaded, but carry ons were not weighed in either direction.
That said, I too remember reading 10kg.
